The Cornigliese Sheep
Did you know that ...
In our territory lives a particular breed of sheep that is now at risk of extinction: the Cornigliese sheep!
Its birth is due to the Bourbons, then dukes of Parma and Piacenza, who in the 700th century ordered the crossing of the local sheep and a prized breed Spanish Merino, to obtain a better quality of wool.
Historically it is a triple-purpose breed (milk, meat, wool), although today the breed is predominantly raised for meat, due to its compact muscle mass and low fat content. Long-lived (up to ten years), very fecund and hardy, it is ideal for pasture-raising, and several flocks still practice transhumance.
