Crocus in the Apennines under the snow
Il Wild Crocus, also called “Greater Saffron” to distinguish it from the similar flower from which the well-known spice is obtained, it blooms between February and April and is able to anticipate spring by a few months as its bulbs begin to produce one or two isolated violet flowers even when temperatures are low, sometimes curiously peeking out from the snow.
It is a very common flower in the Apennines because it easily adapts to cold temperatures and sudden changes in temperature. Its appearance, in fact, helps it withstand extreme weather conditions: large flowers, very low stems, and bright colors to attract pollinating insects.
